I wrote that song in the studio based on a Wurlitzer lick we found in my voice memos. It was just a 2 chord progression with me humming, but there was something about it. Dave Madden moved it to the guitar and I put words to the melody. It completely transformed. It’s my favorite piece on the record and probably the best thing I’ve ever recorded. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted to say. If I get hit by a bus tomorrow, play that song! “Life is a Time Bomb.” We are all walking around with little clocks counting backwards above our heads that no one can see. Who would want to?! I don’t want to know. You know that song changes key 7 times! We weren’t just being cute, it helps build this tension that gets wonderfully released at each chorus. It’s very stream of consciousness - the lyrics just came and are very repetitive - again to build the tension. I say that “I don’t know how to build a time bomb” over and over, but for me the important lyric is “I will always be the one who’s down.” That’s always been true of me, for better and worse.
